What to Buy Your Ex Boyfriend or
Ex Girlfriend For Valentine's Day

Around this time of year I start getting a ton of emails from people wondering what they can should buy their ex for Valentine's day. Should they buy a gift, write a poem, or send a card with flowers?

The intent is usually to buy or do something that is so amazing or meaningful that the ex will want to get back together right then, on the spot.

I can tell you with certainty, that's not how it works.

Getting back your ex boyfriend or ex girlfriend is about one thing... raising attraction. Attraction is what brought you together in the first place. Loss of attraction is what led to the break up (click here for more on the role of attraction in break ups).

Until your ex sees you as attractive - in other words, unless they want to be with you - it's not going to matter what you buy them for Valentine's Day. You could write them the sweetest poem in the world on a cute little homemade card or buy them a $300 ipod but, if they don't find you attractive, it's not going to help you get back together. They will thank you, they will like it, but that doesn't equate to getting together or relationship repair.

Gifts simply do not raise attraction. (If they did, we'd all be putting ourselves up for auction to the richest man or woman. Most of us don't do that.)

In fact, buying your ex something for Valentine's day may actually drive them FURTHER away by making you even less attractive! It seems counter-intuitive but it's true. Your gift may be interpreted by them as needy and have a negative impact on your chances of getting them back. Neediness is extremely unattractive.
